VICTORIAN KITCHEN

This Victorian kitchen remodel refined traffic flow between the front and back of the house, and pleased a couple with opposing aesthetic tastes.

Traffic from the front of the house used to flow through the middle of the kitchen. Separating the traffic between spaces from the kitchen’s work triangle restored logical connections while increasing kitchen efficiency. An existing window along the kitchen’s main wall reached below counter height, so it was replaced with a shorter window to increase counter space. Adding an additional window along that wall created a visually pleasing balance. A former porch became space for a dinette.

Combining stained quarter-sawn oak with painted cabinets fulfilled his love of the home’s rich woodwork with her preference for an airier look.
Creating an ice cream parlour-style dinette adds a sense of fun. Island light fixtures were salvaged from a renovation of the University of Minnesota’s Walter Library.
